Charles Desan (19th Century)
Resting cattle at a stream
Oil on canvas, 39 x 29 cm
The landscape painted on this canvas is a classic Belgium landscape. The painting breathes a romanticism style. It has a small twinkle of humour in it as the bull is staring right over its shoulder at the viewer of the painting. The undulating landscape reveals this scene is somewhere in the Ardennes This work is signed in the lower right corner by Charles Desan. The frame of this painting is a hand gilded 19th-century frame.
Charles Desan worked probably around the year of 1829. It is not clear when he was born and when he died. Desan was a Belgium painter who painted mostly landscapes with cows. Charles Desan is included in the National Art History Documentation Center (RKD) in The Hague, Netherlands, and in the ‘Benezit Dictionary of Artists’, a respectable which consists an extensive publication of bibliographical information on painters, sculptors, designers and engravers.
